To Drill or NOT to Drill - Good Question...

We have been asked many times why we do don't recommend drilling on natural nails and we wanted to shed some light :)

Drilling of any kind is damaging to the nail bed. Polish enhancement treatments, such as Gel Polish, should be used to strengthen the nail bed, not weaken it.

You may have noticed we don't drill to remove gel polish, not even to "Break the Seal" of the Polish...nor will we soak your nails in a bowl of acetone. Both technique short-cuts weaken the nail bed and will cause long term damage to your nails, causing a need for intermittent breaks to regain strength and nail integrity.

A proper Gel Manicure is designed to last 2 weeks, 3 weeks if you are very careful with your manicure. (if you're a crazy mom like me... I am pushing 2 weeks! lol) While drilling on your natural nail bed will cause the polish to last longer, it weakens the integrity of the bed and over time will cause your nails to be brittle and prohibit growth.

A combined approach of 1. Correct polish removal and 2. Regular polish changes, will ensure adequate "breathability", lessen the likelihood of fungus growth, and promote overall healthier nails. If you are currently experiencing weakened, brittle nails... come visit any of our licensed nail technicians for a comprehensive treatment plan. If you are having trouble getting polish to last on your natural nail... there ARE answers without drilling... make sure to let us know and we can walk through your options.

One of our main missions at Avant Tous is to educate and empower our clients for a healthier, more beautiful YOU! Your choice of nail color, art, length, style, etc.. makes a lasting impression on the people you meet... Let our licensed nail technicians help express your style through your nails!

We know there are many nail salon options, and we want to say THANK YOU to our clients for your love and loyalty.

Summer Skincare Tips!

Summer Skincare Tips By Kellie Watts:

Summertime for most of us means beach vacations, swimming, tanning and

ultimately lots of time spent in the sun. But that summer sun can get pretty hot and

without properly caring for your skin, signs of aging, dryness, and dullness can creep up

on you. One of the best tips I can give to clients, especially in the summer, is to keep your

skin hydrated! Moisturizing is an essential step in caring for your skin. A moisturizer

increases water content in the skin and can also help prevent moisture loss. A common

misconception is that using a moisturizer is only for normal to dry skin types. Oil is not

moisture and oily skin is actually a reaction to a lack of hydration, so even clients with

oily and acenic skin need to moisturize! One of my favorite moisturizers in our skincare

line, Rhonda Allison, is Moisture Au Lait. It is a lightweight, fast-absorbing moisturizer

containing vitamins and natural oils, which makes it perfect for all skin types and

conditions. One of the most beneficial ways to use Moisture Au Lait is to apply it after an

exfoliation treatment like Dermaplaning. This service exfoliates the epidermis while also

removing the fine vellus hair, allowing for deeper product penetration; the result is

smoother skin texture and appearance. And by making moisturizing an essential step to

your skincare routine, it will help you achieve and maintain more youthful, radiant skin

this summer.

How to Create Good Skincare Habits in Teens

Good skincare habits form well before adulthood and should be taught at an early age to prevent early skin damage. Most Aestheticians first start to see teenagers when acne starts popping up and over the counter cleansers and products aren't cutting it. But, in many cases, acne can be avoided with preventative care rather than reactive care. We recommend having a consultation with one of our Licensed Aestheticians at the age of 12. It is a free consultation that can give your teen a true advantage when fighting the ever looming "teenage skin" fight. Here is a great article written specifically about Creating Good Skincare Habits early on:

1. Stay Ahead of the Curve- schedule an early Teen or Pre-Teen Consultation to understand your teens skin.
2. Premature Growth- some kids start to experience acne as early as 8. Know and understand your child's needs.
3. Understand the Importance of a Balanced PH - this not only effects your skin, but also your hair, skin and nails.
4. Learn about affordable treatment options for your teen and tween around town. Don't think running to the Dermatologist is the only answer.

Our Skincare Management Team understands all ages of skin and can help guide you and your family through the ups and downs of hormones, skin changes, and maturing. All consultations and initial meetings with our team are FREE of charge and can be scheduled same day.

While, I love writing blogs for our clients to read... we came across this blog post from our Skincare Line, Rhonda Allison, and it is simply too good not to share. There are SO many women out there that the sheer sound of the words "Chemical Peel" frighten them. Rightfully so! Chemical Peels are complicated and can be messed up easily when performed by someone who doesn't thoroughly understand acids and not only how to cocktail them correctly, but also how they interact with your skin. Our practicing Estheticians are very well trained in all of those areas. In fact, Peel protocols are the area in which our Esty's spend the majority of their Continuing Ed time in. So... what WILL a peel do for you? Read below to find out more!

A chemical peel is a technique which involves the application of a variety of chemical solutions to remove the damaged outer layers of dead skin cells from the skin’s surface.  It is extremely beneficial for many skin conditions such as hyperpigmentation, rosacea, acne, sun damage, and photo aging.  By removing the build-up of dead skin cells and stimulating the regenerative process, you will notice marked improvements in the formation of wrinkles and fine lines, texture and tone of the skin, hydration, reduced pore size, clearing of blemishes and more balanced oil production and an overall healthier skin appearance.

All Rhonda Allison treatment procedures are considered superficial; they do not penetrate beyond the epidermis or papillary dermis.  They are not to be confused with medical or physician-strength peels that affect the reticular dermis.

This refers to a treatment that does not usually cause immediate exfoliation and only removes the outer layer of skin or the stratum corneum.  As treatments are repeated, the skin will experience a mild sloughing.

These peels affect the intra-epidermal layer, and exfoliation occurs within two to three days after application.  The skin goes through very little down time.  Peeling consists of light flaking similar to a sunburn peel.

These peels affect the deepest intra-epidermal layers.  The skin becomes brown and crusty then undergoes considerable peeling, which occurs three to four days after application.  The skin peels in large segments as opposed to flaking.  The entire process takes about seven to ten days."

MicroNeedling and DermaPlaning- By Katie Curry

We are gearing up for an incredible Fall 2015. The staff has been going through lots of training throughout the Summer and we are THRILLED to start bringing these new services to you! To kick that off, here is a little more information on two of our most buzzed about services!

Dermaplaning:  is a simple procedure where the outer most layer of the epidermis is exfoliated with the use of a blade and ridding the skin of fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). This helps makeup applications apply more smoothly, giving a flawless finish. Dermaplaning is an effective way to resurface the skin. It diminishes fine lines, smooths acne scarring, improves skin texture and tone, temporarily removes fine facial hair, generates new healthy cell growth and enhances penetration of skin care products. This a great treatment for clients who are pregnant or nursing who want a deep exfoliate, but are not allowed to use peeling agents on their skin.

Microneedling: collagen induction therapy treatment that results in production of new collagen and elastin. It controls and precise micro- injuries to the skin that is delivered by a high speed automated needle tips. Prior to the treatment numbing cream is applies to minimize pain that is felt during the procedure.  Microneedling helps reduce acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, loose or lax skin, skin texture and pore size, also reduces the appearance of stretch marks. The great thing about this treatment is it's safe to use on all skin types and colors. There is no risk of post inflammatory hyper-pigmention making it a safe procedure.

Results can be seen with as little as 1 treatment. Depending on the area of the body and severity, multiple treatments may be required. Check out some before and after pictures in our B/A Gallery. Chemical Peels can also be used in conjunction to enhance results.

How Great Skincare Products Effect the Entire Family

So before I dive into this... this is not one of those "If momma's happy, everybody's happy" type of blogs! Don't get me wrong, that is totally true but not the focus of today's blog.

Before opening Avant Tous, if you would have told me that a truly great skincare line can positively effect my entire family, I certainly wouldn't have believed you because I knew NO different. I have always been the "business" partners are the "Skin Genesis'". However, my view now is incredibly different and thought it was an important piece of information to pass along to you!

First of all.... all skincare is NOT created equal. Not even a little. ..another topic..another day :)

Skincare lines should cover all things skin, not just your face! Your SKIN is the largest organ on your body and a really good skincare company understands this. So WHY should that matter?

Example #1 - When you, your husband or child gets a sunburn...what do you do? Typically people reach for Aloe Vera or if you're really Cajun, you may make a paste with File (the spice typically used in Gumbo). Did you also know that you can use Arnica?
Arnica Montana has been used in homeopathic medical treatments since the 1500s. An incredibly effective treatment for trauma to the skin, including bruises, sprains, burns, chapped lips and a HOST of other things. Arnica is an all organic solution to traumatized skin and a MUST have in your medicine cabinet. Rhonda Allison's Arnica is extremely high quality and have many, many clients that swear by it. I certainly do! Retail Price for Arnica Therapy: $14

Example #2- Cuts, Burns, Rashes, Allergic Reaction, etc... All very common issues, specifically with children. Many times we may think to reach for Neosporin or something along those lines. Did you know that Stem Cells from Fruit are incredible rejuvenating and rapid healers?   Apple stem cells have  metabolites which insure the longevity of skin cells. Rhonda Allison's Sea Gems is another "Must Have" for your home. Sea Gems is extracted plant stem cells combined with special strands from deep sea waters.  It takes the "BURN" out of a sunburn, it promotes rapid cell growth and rejuvenation, helping to strengthen and protect your skin tissue.
Retail Price for Sea Gems: $18

**Please contact a skincare professional or physician before using any of these products. We do not recommend using any product without full understanding of it in it's entirety. For severe burns or cuts, please seek immediate medical attention. The aforementioned is meant for topical treatment of minor cuts, bruises and burns. Avoid eye area when applying to skin and do not ingest.

If I could only have ONE Skincare product

This product really gets under my skin, but in a good way! If I could only have one skin care product from Rhonda Allison it would have to be Moisture Au Lait. Moisturizers are such a necessity that so many people stray away from because they feel moisture is the last thing they need. That however is incorrect, moisturizers go into your skin to hydrate, revitalize, and nourish all day long which should be a very important part in your home skin care regimen. Moisture Au Lait by Rhonda Allison is a protein enriched cream that is suitable for all skin types. Many clients with sensitive skin are drawn to the product for its refreshing feel. It is very light and fast absorbing. Moisture Au Lait is great for day and night use. This product is perfect to wear under your makeup or even as a quick daytime eye cream. Overall an outstanding product I’m not too sure what I would do without it!

Dry Skin? The winter transition...and what to do?

Esthetician: Whitney Richards
Dry skin during the winter months is a frustrating problem for so many but there are many things you can do to combat that dry skin. Let's start with your cleanser! If your using a gel cleanser when your skin is dry that could be just adding to the problem as gel based products can be very drying. Using a creamy cleanser would be a better option. You can alternate between the gel and creamy cleanser if you don't want to give your gel cleanser up completely. Great options for creamy cleansers are Image Vital C Hydrating Cleanser, Rhonda Allison Pumpkin Cleanser with lactic acid and Rhonda Allison Milk Wash. Next up....exfoliating. Exfoliating twice a week is optimal, pick 2 days and stick to it. Exfoliating is very important as it removes that dry dead skin buildup, prevents breakouts and promotes a healthy glow. My favorite scrub is Rhonda Allison Brightening Scrub but you can also make one at home here is my favorite one to make at home...equal parts brown sugar and honey. Sugar has a natural glycolic acid which is used in many skin care products to aid in exfoliation. Honey has many benefits most importantly antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory. Grapeseed oil can also be mixed with the brown sugar instead of honey. Just give your face a good scrub and rinse. (avoid the eye area) On the same days you exfoliate you can also do a hydrating face mask. Mix milk and honey until you get a creamy consistency. The lactic acid in milk has many benefits mainly hydration. And we just discussed the benefits of honey. Leave on as long as you like and remove with a warm towel. Next for dry skin a great moisturizer, my pick, is Rhonda Allison Exotica Rhodiola. Most importantly stay hydrated and healthy. Beautiful hydrated skin is a combination of taking care of yourself on the inside and outside & don't forget to see your esthetician!
**All products mentioned are available for purchase at Avant Tous Beauty Bar and Spa**

Change in the Air

Change... the only thing in life that is constant! Business and Personal are no different and both can be equally as challenging. Over the last few months at Avant, we have been heavily prep'ing behind the scenes for lots of change. Hopefully, ALL things you will find beneficial to you! We wanted to address a few of the big changes and hope that you will embrace them and grow with us.

The first big change: Hope is going to the back of the house. Many of you have seen her beautiful face less and less at the Beauty Bar. Although, this may seem like a bad thing, this is actually a GREAT thing. THANKS to you and your wonderful commitment to us...we need her to focus more in an owners role. She will still do services on Thursdays and special events; however, her main focus now will be on growing our Estheticians. She will spend most of her time behind the scenes training and developing. We only request that you give our new girls a shot. They are really amazing and extensively trained...and are STILL trained every week on Tuesdays. Trust us, you are in great hands!

The second big change: We want to be the beauty bar for your life. What does that mean? Well, appointments are amazing and they work well for most people... except...sometimes you don't always remember to make an appointment or remember about the appointment?! Hello...I'm talking to myself :) SO... we are transitioning to a "Best of Both Worlds" type of atmosphere. We are trying to expand to the suite next door to us to accommodate for more space and add service rooms. This will not only give us more service capabilities, but it will also allow for "Life". Crossing our fingers for opening during the 1st of the year.
We still will encourage appointments...but we will ALWAYS welcome you as a walk in. This added space and service capability will make that an easier transition and less wait time.

The third is not really a change, but just an overwhelming urge to scream THANK YOU from the rooftop. Sometimes when I am in the spa, late at night and by myself...I just close my eyes and breath it in. Is this REALLY mine?! Do we REALLY get to hang out with amazing women all day long!! WOW...I don't know if I can express what a blessing YOU all are to US!!
When you own your own business, you know that every single appointment...every single dollar is incredibly important. We truly can't keep our doors open if you weren't as loyal as you have been and from the bottom of my heart. Thank you! I pray that you continue to stay loyal to us even through times of change. We are very committed to you and your service satisfaction!

Thanks for hearing my thoughts :) I am VERY excited about moving forward and growing! I hope you are too and will continue to support! We are open books....please let us know if you have any questions.

God Bless- Ellen Pino
